A Presidency Defined

Happy Friday.

From Rueters: U.S. President George W. Bush writes a note to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during a Security Council meeting at the 2005 World Summit and 60th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York September 14, 2005.

World leaders are exploring ways to revitalize the United Nations at a summit on Wednesday but their blueprint falls short of Secretary-General Kofi Annan's vision of freedom from want, persecution and war.

W has other priorities in mind.

I'm certainly no fan of W, but this kind of cheap shot lessens the effectiveness of legitimate criticism -- such as last week's discussion regarding his Katrina (non)response. We'd all like our Commander-in-Chief to respond to emergencies rather than play guitar at photo ops, and presumably it'd be nice if he cut his vacation time back to a sensible three weeks or so. But now we've reached the point where he should overcome millions of years of evolution and cease urinating? C'mon, we can do better.

Nonetheless, if any institution is in need of a good pissing on, it's the UN. Unless, that is, you're a fan of institutions that sit such human rights luminaries as China, Romania and Algeria on the Security Council. Not to mention drafting an endless list of resolutions against Israel (http://www.action-for-un-renewal.org.uk/pages/isreal_un_resolutions.htm). Georgie Boy has enough flaws to fill a greater man's (presumably) stronger bladder, but maybe for a change he's right not to support "Secretary-General Kofi Annan's vision of freedom from want, persecution and war."
